Chittoor Firing: SIT visits scene of incident

The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the Chittoor firing incident in which 20 persons died, today visited the spot, a day after it collected documents related to the April 7 incident from the Tirupati urban police.

“We have taken in possession of all documents from the local police pertaining to the case in pursuance of the (order by) the Hyderabad High Court. Today, the eight-member team visited the scene of crime,” said IPS officer Ravishankar Ayyanar who is heading the team.

The team held a preliminary discussion on how the incident occurred on the scene of the crime, he said.

The SIT, headed by an IG-rank officer, was constituted by state government on April 24 to probe the incident in which 20 persons, believed to be fellers of red sandalwood, were allegedly killed in firing by the Special Task Force (STF) in Seshachalam hill ranges of the district.

Based on a complaint filed by Muniyammal, wife of Sashi Kumar, one of the victims, the Chandragiri police under Tirupati Urban Police limits had registered an FIR under sections 302 (murder) and 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) against “unknown” task force personnel on April 14.

The High Court on Tuesday directed the SIT to complete the probe within 60 days and keep it updated on the progress in the meantime.
