Chinese hackers reportedly exploited the Federal Election Commission’s website on the first day of US government shutdown.
A non-partisan investigative journalism group said that the act might be the worst of sabotage in the FEC’s 38-year old history.
Senior reporter at the Center for Public Integrity, David Levinthal said that the hackers’ motivation was not yet clear, but taking down a website of the US federal government is a big deal to them, Fox News reports.
Levinthal said that the hackers aren’t the people who like United States and want to do damage to the country, its freedom and democracy.
According to the report, as a result of the shutdown , none of the FEC’s 339 employees was on the job the day of the hacking attack.
Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security said that the investigation is ongoing and no final determination has been made, adding that there hasn’t been any indication if any sensitive or personal information had been compromised. (ANI)
