China under-reported 2014 defence spending by 20%: US report

An annual report by the US defence department says that China has under reported its 2014 defence spending by 20 percent.

According to the BBC, China’s stated budget for this year was 120 billion dollars (70bn pounds), but the US report said the actual figure was closer to 145 billion dollars.

Meanwhile, the US asked China to be more transparent about its plans when dealing with regional powers over disputed South China Sea islands.

The report stated Pentagon as saying that Beijing was splurging much more money on upgrading its arsenal of drones, warships, jets and cyber weapons and was incessantly focused on the territorial disputes in the South and East China Seas .

The report said that absent greater transparency from China and a change in its behaviour, these concerns will likely intensify as the country’s military modernisation programme progresses. (ANI)
