China releases detained Canadian national

Beijing: China has released the detained Canadian national, spokesman for Global Affairs Canada Richard Walker informed on Sunday.

Sarah McIver was detained due to a work permit issue related to her teaching job in China.

Walker, however, refused any further information about McIver’s return to Canada.

McIver’s detention was confirmed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on December 19, who had said that the detention was more of a “routine”.

Retaliating to Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou’s arrest, China had earlier detained two other Canadian citizens- Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig on the suspicion of “activities that endangered China’s national security.
