Beijing, April 07: China will build 56 more airports in the country in the next five years, an official said Thursday.
The number of airports in the country is likely to top 230 in the next five years, the China Daily quoted Li Jiaxiang, head of the civil aviation administration, as saying.
“Investment in China’s aviation industry is likely to reach 1.5 trillion yuan (about $230 billion) in the next five years,” Li said at a civil aviation conference in Guiyang.
China’s investments in building airports surged since the turn of the century. Between 2005 and 2010, 33 airports were constructed while 33 others were renovated or expanded, bringing the total number of airports to 175 in 2010.
Investment in building civil aviation infrastructure during this period hit 250 billion yuan, nearly equivalent to the amount spent during the previous 25 years.
