New Delhi : With China blocking India’s bid to have JeM chief and Pathankot terror attack mastermind Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist by the United Nations, Defence Expert Samir Saran on Monday said that Beijing would never condemn all-weather friend Pakistan.
“I think we have a wrong expectation. I think if we believe that China is going to partake in the condemnation of Pakistan to the extent we wanted to. I think India needs to separate the issue of the listing of the terrorist from the issue of condemning Pakistan,” Saran told ANI.
“I think the next time we put forward the same proposition before the UN, we must make sure that we have segregated the two. I suspect the Chinese may be more willing to ban the figure Masood Azhar rather than condemn Pakistan,” he added.
The defence expert said India must realize that the Chinese in their statement have referred to Pakistan as an all weather friend, adding they are not going to be on board completely with New Delhi on the same.
“Therefore, we must be clever in the way we seek their support on this issue. And I do suspect that in the coming months if you are to put a proposal again written in the manner in which the Chinese are able to participate, we might see a positive response from China,” he added.
Saran further said China is not saving Masood Azhar.
“China is saving Pakistan.China will not condemn Pakistan. China is investing in Pakistan, China sees Pakistan as an all-weather friend.So, we must make sure that we give them ample room where they can condemn and isolate and ban organisations and people like Masood Azhar without becoming a party to condemning Pakistan. If we put a proposal like thjis, the Chinese will support us,” he added.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today strongly raised with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi the issue of China blocking India’s bid to have Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist by the UN.
Swaraj took up the issue with Wang at a bilateral meeting in Moscow on the sidelines of the Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral meeting of their foreign ministers. (ANI)
