China flood traps 28 in coal mine

Beijing, November 21: Flood waters have trapped 28 people in a coal mine in southwestern China as thirteen of the 41-member crew managed to escape.

The accident occurred at 11 a.m. near the city of
Neijiang in the Sichuan province, Xinhua reported, citing local authorities.

A total of forty-one miners were working in the coal mine when the flood hit, but thirteen of them escaped.

Rescue efforts are underway but the exact whereabouts of the trapped miners are unknown.

China’s mining industry is notorious for its lack of safety measures and high number of casualties.

Last year, over 2,500 Chinese workers lost their lives in mining accidents across the country.
