China to build 36 mn low-cost houses

Beijing, March 07: China will build 36 million affordable houses over the next five years, an official of China’s top planning body has said.

Some 20 million low-cost houses will be built in two years, while another 16 million will come up in the following three-year period ending 2015, Xu Xianping, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, was quoted as saying by Shanghai Daily.

Land for the homes to be built this year will be acquired by this month, Land Minister Xu Shaoshi said.

Last year, around 3.7 million affordable houses – which included budget homes and low rent apartments – were built across the country.
