Mumbai, June 23: With no forensic evidence or eyewitness descriptions, DNA test is only way to nail culprit
The serial rape-and-murder instances in Nehru Nagar, Kurla have put the police in a tight spot. What’s worrying the police is the calculated manner in which the criminal has been making his moves, leaving no trace behind.
In the absence of any eyewitness or circumstantial evidence, the only way the police can nail the criminal is by way of a DNA test.
No leads
“This serial rapist-killer is very smart. It will certainly be difficult for us to nab him, especially since he does not leave behind clues,” admitted an official of Nehru Nagar police station.
“Many claim to have seen him, but their descriptions are inconsistent. There is no eyewitness to his crime and no evidence at the crime spot.”
The police’s predicament is how to get clinching evidence in the case.
“Neither does the accused leave any clues like fingerprints nor does he use any weapon,” said a police source. “So, the only concrete evidence will be a DNA test.”
So far, the police have zeroed in on a number of suspects, including a policeman’s son. Already several suspects have been made to undergo DNA tests and already people are complaining about this. “So, we have to be very cautious,” said the source, adding that the police do have sketchy information, but are unsure if it is reliable.
A police officer, who is part of the investigation, said that they feared that even if the criminal was caught, it will be difficult to gather evidence.
No senior officer from the Nehru Nagar police station was available for comment.
