Child Marriage foiled by Bhongir SHE Team

Hyderabad: Bhongir SHE Team conducted a public awareness program against child marriages and stopped a child marriage at Ramojinayak Thanda in Gollagudem village of Thurkapally Mandal.

On Tuesday, a villager informed the Bhongir Division SHE Team that marriage of a 16-year-old girl of Ramojinayak Thanda of Gollagudem village of Thurkapally Mandal) was scheduled to take place on March 13 with a 23-year-old person of the same thanda. On receipt of the information, the Bhongir SHE team, accompanied by Turkapally police, went to the victim’s house and talked to the parents of the minor girl and the boy and counseled them to stop the marriage and rescued the minor girl.

Mahesh M Bhagwat, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Rachakonda, appreciated the good work done by the Bhongir She teams under Child Marriages Prevention Act and appealed to the public not to perform marriages of minors. He also warned that priests, wedding card printers, elders and supporters of child marriage, parents of child will be held responsible. The offenders will be awarded two year imprisonment or fine or both for violating the Act.
