Hyderabad was in the world media headlines last week as the South zone police rescued scores of child labours during multiple raid conducted on bangle making units, hotels, mechanic shops etc. These children were kept under inhuman conditions and virtually held captive inside small rooms. They were forced to work from dawn to dusk.
While combating the menace of child labour besides police, district administration and labour department should direct its staff to child labour with an iron hand. Helpline numbers should be issued for the citizens to report any such activity. District administration should also provide employment to the family members of child labour who are forced into the occupation due to poverty. They should also be provided loans on easy installments to effectively combat child labour menace.
