Child electrocuted in school

Kolkata, June 14: Mohammad Rehan Ali, a two-and-a-half-year-old boy, was electrocuted when he touched a water tap at a south Kolkata school on Saturday morning. Probe revealed that the metal outlet of the water tank had been touching a live wire hanging from the meter box.

Rehan’s father Mohammad Siraj is one of the security guards of the school Ballygunge Park Day School on Syed Amir Ali Avenue. The family stays on the school campus.

Rehan’s mother Arzoo Parveen said: “In the morning, Rehan was hungry and asked for milk. When I was heating the milk, he went out of the room. Suddenly, around 9 am, I went out after hearing a scream and found my boy stuck to the tap.”

Arzoo raised an alarm and tried to rescue the kid. The child was taken to Calcutta National Medical College in an unconscious state. But Rehan could not be saved.

Police said a machine had recently been installed to pump water up to the Muslim orphanage upstairs. The pump was temporarily connected to the meter box. But the wire somehow came in contact with the metal tap. The boy touched it and died.

There was tension in the area after the news spread and locals put up a road blockade. Later, police intervened and the blockade was withdrawn. Police initiated a case of negligence against the school authorities and detained two maintenance employees.
