Chidambaram wants power sharing in TN after next polls

Coimbatore, August 29: Exuding confidence of an alliance involving Congress coming to power in Tamil Nadu after next year”s Assembly elections, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram tonight said the party should be accommodated in the government.

Without mentioning any party, Chidambaram said “an alliance” would come to power in the next elections in Tamil Nadu which should accommodate the Congress in the government.

“I am longing for a Congress rule in Tamil Nadu for the last four decades, but only thing is that I am not expressing it openly,” Chidambaram said at a public meeting here organised by TNCC as part of the centenary celebrations of late Congress leader C Subramaniam. He was reacting to references made by other speakers about Congress not getting an opportunity to rule the state.

The Congress is now extending outside support to the DMK Government. There have been demands from sections of the party that it should share power with DMK. The Congress-led UPA Government had given a good number of schemes for the benefit of the people including those in Tamil Nadu, Chidambaram said, adding people should be made aware of this.

The party should prepare itself and win the confidence of the people. The electorate could give a mandate wherein Congress could share power with other parties, as the people lost trust in single party, Chidambaram said.

He also said coalition governments were becoming the order of the day and India was no exception, as people had lost faith in the single party government. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who also addressed the meeting, said the right to food would soon become a reality as the government was in the process of drafting the legislation.

He said the government had already brought in the Right to Information, Right to Employment and Right to education acts for the benefit of the people. Stating that for Congress, power was a tool to serve the people better and effectively, he said whether in government or out of power, the party was committed to serve the people, and party President Sonia Gandhi was keen on ensuring the welfare of people.
