Chennai, August 12: Marking yet another first in passenger service, the Southern Railway today introduced ladies special EMU trains for the benefit of women commuters.
This was for the first time that an exclusive train service for women was launched in the annals of Indian Railways.
The much awaited ladies special services in the Tambaram-Chennai Beach, Arakkonam-Chennai Beach and Chennai Beach-Velachery sector was flagged off by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram at a function held here today. The Tambaram-Chennai Beach Ladies Special EMU would leave Tambaram at 0837 hrs, Arakkonam-Chennai Beach Ladies Special EMU would leave Arakkonam at 0838 hrs and Chennai Beach-Velachery Ladies Special EMU would leave Chennai Beach at 0839 hrs.
The regular services of ladies special EMUs would commence from tomorrow. In the Tambaram-Chennai sector, the morning Peak-hour Ladies special will leave Tambaram at 0837 hrs and reach Chennai Beach at 0932 hrs. In the return direction, the Ladies Special will leave Chennai Beach at 1757 hrs and arrive Tambaram at 18.52 hrs.
In the Arakkonam-Chennai sector, the morning Peak-hour Ladies Special will leave Arakkonam at 0700 hrs and reach Chennai Beach at 0855 hrs. In the return direction, the Ladies Special will leave Chennai Beach at 1750 hrs and arrive Arakkonam at 2005 hrs.
On the MRTS sector, the morning Peak-hour Ladies Special will leave Chennai Beach at 0900 hrs and reach Velachery at 0940 hrs. In the return direction, the Ladies Special will leave Velachery at 1705 hrs and arrive Chennai Beach at 1745 hrs.
