Chennai: SRM University authorities are struggling with student protest who allege the administration has failed to take action in a sexual harassment incident which involves varsity’s undergraduate student and a male sanitation worker.
However the University’s administration has denied the allegations leveled by the students.
SRM University located in Chennai’s outskirts at Kattankulathur area witnessed protest inside the campus on Thursday night.
Responding to the allegations raised by students, SRM University Vice Chancellor Sandeep Sancheti, denied the allegations of inaction and said the administration would look into the complaint.
“Students are discussing with us. Whatever the matter is, it will be taken care of. If there is a matter, it will be inquired,” Sancheti told sources.
According to sources, a second year undergraduate student of the university was sexually harassed by a male sanitation worker inside a women’s hostel lift on Thursday afternoon around 3 pm.
“The man masturbated in front of the woman student in the hostel lift, following which she reported the issue to the authorities,” the student source told.
While another student protester said that the hostel warden, has allegedly delayed giving access to CCTV footage of the elevator after the student reported the incident.
“The employee was identified by the student in the CCTV footage. However she was asked to stay mum about the incident by the authorities,” the students allege.
Meanwhile the situation was brought under control after the Local area police officials reached the spot, Indian Express reports.
The student protesters only dispersed after the police officials assured them of taking action in the said matter.
