Islamabad: From riding a motorbike, to driving auto rickshaws, from posing at garbage dumps to making rotis in tandoor – the candidates in fray for the upcoming elections in Pakistan are using unique ways to lure voters.
While Rasheed Ahmad”>Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad of Awami Mulsim League posted a video of him taking out hot rotis from a tandoor in Pind, there are others like Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Arif Alvi who posted a picture of him driving an auto rickshaw in Karachi.
While Dawn posted the video of Rasheed Ahmad at a dhaba, saying, “The man from Pindi’s Raja Bazaar is on what seems like his campaign trail. Just under an hour ago, he tweeted a video of his, at a tandoor, making his own roti. Has he won your heart and mind? Do you want your elected officials to make rotis for you?,” Geo TV quoted Alvi saying: “I definitely enjoyed driving the rickshaw for about an hour in the rally until my team forced me to get on the truck to be more visible. Sadly they took all the fun away.” Alvi even used a dialogue by Amitabh Bachchan to put through his message to the voters.
Another candidate, Ayaz Memon Motiwala, an independent candidate from different constituencies of Karachi, was all over the social media with his unique style of campaigning. “Motiwala, in a bid to raise awareness regarding unhygienic conditions and dysfunctional sewage systems of Karachi, has posed inside a gutter, sat on garbage dump and even lied on sewage water. His antics have garnered both national and international attention,” wrote Geo TV.
Similarly, videos of PML-N candidate from Lahore, Rana Mubashir Iqbal, were doing rounds where he is seen touching feet of an elderly man begging while seeking votes. As the voters were seen complaining against the neglect by the politicians saying they come to them only after five years during elections. In the video Iqbal is seen joking with the elderly voter.
