Cheated by boyfriend, 25-year-old cries rape

Mumbai, June 08: When Neelam Mehta (name changed), 25, met Dhiren Dhanak, an MBA graduate, through a matrimonial website, she thought she had found her life partner. After a brief romance, the couple decided to start living together. That’s when things started to go downhill.

Mehta, a software engineer, filed a complaint with the Tilak Nagar police alleging that that the man she had been living with for the past year had raped and cheated her.

She claimed that Dhanak had gone back on his promise to marry her and was also dating other women.

Dhanak, a native of Ahmedabad, works with an insurance firm at a senior position while Mehta, who hails from Manipal in Karnataka, is employed by a software development firm in the city.

Mehta and Dhanak had been living together in a rented flat at Chembur. However, Mehta found out that her boyfriend flirted with other women. She also came to know that Dhanak’s profile on the matrimonial website was active and he continued to respond to marriage proposals from other girls.

Mehta finally confronted Dhanak, which led to a quarrel between the two. In April, she moved out of the house and shifted to her cousin’s place in Thane.
In her complaint, Mehta said Dhanak had raped her on several occasions.

“Dhanak’s parents were against the relationship and had asked Mehta to put an end to it,” said Ramesh Gavit, senior inspector, Tilak Nagar police station. “Dhanak fled from the city when he learnt that a case had been filed against him. We are going to send a police team to Ahmedabad to search for him.”

Mehta alleged that Dhanak’s relatives made threatening calls to her and his father took her to an advocate’s office asking her to give in writing that whatever had happened was consensual.
Dhanak comes from an affluent family in Ahmedabad and his relatives had threatened Mehta with dire consequences if she did not take back the case, police said.
