Charu Sinha blamed for SKU arrests

Hyderabad, April 24: Congress leaders are said to be opposing the appointment of IPS officer Charu Sinha as DIG Anantapur because during her previous assignment in the district she was tough on students of Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur agitation for a united Andhra Pradesh.

Senior police officials, however, see this only as a ruse. They say it is the powerful mining lobby which does not want Sinha back as she is known to be an upright officer.

Sinha was among 45 IPS officers transferred two days ago, and she was given the tough posting of DIG Anantapur. But in the face of opposition from unseen interests in the district, her appointment has been put on hold. She continues to be stationed in the office of director-general of police (DGP) without a posting.

Charu Sinha was detailed to Anantapur district as an officer on special duty a couple of months ago when the agitation was going on there against bifurcation of the state. On the day when protests broke out on the SK University campus, Sinha and Anantapur superintendent of police M K Sinha were present on campus.

Mild force was used by the policemen and students were arrested.

Blaming Charu Sinha for the arrests, Congress leaders from the district have conveyed to the powers-thatbe that she should not be appointed as DIG Anantapur.

Police officials, however, say it is really the mining lobby that does not want Sinha around.

Negotiations are said to be going on between the police brass and Congress leaders over the appointment.

“A decision on whether she will go to Anantapur or nor will be taken in a day or two,’’ sources added.
