Charminar gets facelift: GHMC plans to dismantle surrounding buildings

Hyderabad: GHMC is making attempts to beautify the surroundings of Charminar. It proposes to dismantle some of the buildings around the historic monument.

A survey is being undertaken to explore the possibilities of acquiring private properties surrounding Charminar by paying compensations to their owners. The owners of the buildings are also being consulted to surrender their properties. Fifteen such buildings have been identified for dismantling.

It may be mentioned that everyday thousands of foreign tourists visit Charminar. They also visit Ladbazar which is famous for bangles. They see Chowmahala Palace which is an architectural monument. Makkah Masjid is the symbol of grandeur of Islamic heritage.

Recently, granite stones have been laid around Charminar for pedestrians which add to the beauty of the monument. The four arches namely, Char Kaman, Machli Kaman, Kaman Sehr-e-Baatil and Kali Kaman are being renovated.

According to GHMC officials, developmental works to the tune of Rs. 50 crore are being undertaken around Charminar. It has been decided to erect a double barricade and poles around the monument.

Only the tourists will be allowed entry into the monument.
