Nearly nine people have been taken into custody across France in the wake of the deadly terror attack on the Paris office of French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, while a third suspect handed himself into police amid claims that he is innocent.
Paris prosecutor spokeswoman Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre said that the eighteen-year-old Mourad Hamyd let himself in yesterday after hearing his name linked to the attackers. She however, did not specify his relationship to the Kouachi brothers, reported News.com.au.
Hamyd’s nationality and the role played by him in the attack are still unclear. However, people claiming to be classmates of the teenager have advocated his innocence on Twitter, saying he was in school at the time of the attack.
Police said Hamyd was being detained without charge even as #MouradHamydInnocent trends online.
At least 12 people were killed in the attack on the magazine’s headquarters by two masked men. The police has launched a major operation to nab the two suspects, Cherif Kouachi, 32, and his brother, Said, 34.
