Charlie Hebdo cartoon on urdu daily, 2 arrested

City Police on Thursday arrested two “Newspaper vendors Sharif Ahamad Shaikh (60) and Salman Kalam Shaikh (20) for selling an Urdu daily, which had reprinted the cover of French magazine Charlie Hebdo with the cartoon of Prophet Muhammad.”

According to police they have been booked under IPC sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

According to police vendors knew the cartoon, printed on the daily’s front page on January 17, was defamatory in nature but they continued to sell the paper.

Complained made by Chale, who claimed all other vendors stopped selling the paper after the controversy broke out, but the duo continue to sell.

police registered a FIR against the duo, adding, the two were produced before a court which granted them bail.
