Chandigarh local body polls on Dec 18

Chandigarh: Elections to 26 civic wards in Chandigarh will be held on December 18 with the ruling BJP trying to cash in on the note ban and Opposition Congress making the problems arising out of it a major poll issue.

122 candidates, including 67 Independents, are in the fray for the civic polls.

Polling will be conducted at 460 booths from 8 AM to 5 PM.

The results will be declared on December 20.

Of those eligible to vote, 2,70,358 are men and 2,36,819 are women.

Both Congress and BJP are contesting from all 26 wards, while BSP has also put up candidates in the fray from 17 wards.

The Municipal Corporation has 36 members, of which 26 are elected councillors, nine are nominated councillors and one is an MP (ex-officio member of the House).

At present, BJP has 15 councillors, Congress has nine, BSP has one and one is Independent.

While the BJP is trying to cash in on demonetisation in the municipal polls, Congress has made it a major issue with its city unit leaders saying the move was implemented without any “application of mind” as it has put the public to “great hardships”.

Last week, BJP had released its “vision document” that gave an account of work undertaken in the past 10 months by BJP Mayor Arun Sood.

Two weeks ago, BJP chief Amit Shah had addressed a gathering of the booth workers here.
