Chandanagar has brand new sports complex

Hyderabad, April 04: The outlying locality of Chandanagar will now have a spanking new multi-purpose sports complex that the people can use. Built on three acres of land at a cost of Rs 6.27 crore, the complex has outdoor and indoor facilities.

The outdoor stadium has basketball courts, a roller skating rink, space for cricket nets and pitch, two tennis courts and a volleyball court. The indoor stadium has badminton, volleyball, table tennis, yoga and carroms facilities.

The complex was inaugrated by Union minister for petroleum and natural gas S Jaipal Reddy with chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy in attendance.

A few more sports complexes at Gosamahal (Rs 1 crore), Chandulal Baradari (Rs 3 crore) and Kukatpally (Rs 3.30 crore) will also come up soon, said GHMC officials. They said applications for basket ball, roller skating, cricket, tennis, volleyball, table tennis, yoga and carrom will be made after April 15. The membership fee would be decided after getting the nod from the general body on April 7.

Jaipal Reddy made a strong pitch for using land within city limits to build sports facilities for the people rather than give it to beef up big companies. He said the state government should no more allot government lands to private companies. He urged the chief minister to use government lands in municipal limits for developing parks, stadia and playgrounds. Jaipal Reddy said that most of the government lands allotted so far to big companies have only helped them build up their land banks. Few of them cared to develop public park or playground, he said.

About the state government’s request for allotment of houses under the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) scheme, Jaipal Reddy said the Union government was ready to sanction as many houses as the state wanted provided it had the land for them. When he spoke, the chief minister seconded Jaipal Reddy’s idea on land for sports facilities. He pointed out that the foundation stone for the Hyderabad Metro Rail, a Rs 12,232 crore project, would be laid soon once the government received confirmation from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi that they would attend the function.

About the Outer Ring Road project, Kiran Kumar Reddy said more than 75-80 km of the road has been completed out of the total of 158 km.
