Process of shifting of the Chanchalguda Central Prison from the city has begun as the officials have identified the land near Viqarabad where new prison should be constructed and the land acquisition may be taken up soon. The jail would be established in a sprawling 500 acres of land. The prison would be modernised as per the present standards and an open prison on the lines of Cherlapally Prison is also planned.
The Chanchalguda Prison, which was built by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad State has been serving the prison needs of the region for the past 138 years. At present, it is housing about 1,000 prisoners. It remained a landmark in Hyderabad over a century.
The shifting of the prison is part of government’s plans to acquire government lands in the core city for welfare activities. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao felt that it would be better to use the land of the central prison, 30 acres, for construction of residential schools for the minorities and also for other purposes.
