Chanchalguda jail road closed for public use

The stretch of road in front of the historical Chanchalguda jail was finally closed for public use and it is planned to set up gates at both the sides of the roads. The jail constructed by Nizam of Deccan in 1870 was once spread over 100 acre but now it has shrunk to just 30 acre land.

The Chanchalguda jail built in the period of Prime minister of Hyderabad Deccan Mir Laeq Ali Salar Jung I, initially housed police department; then revenue department and court was established in the building; later in 1878 it was converted into the Central jail.

It must be noted that Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur had provided kitchen facilities to the prisoners based on their caste and religion so that prisoners’ sentiments were not hurt. Jail also has an ancient masjid which is recorded in waqf gazette.

The road has been closed for vehicular traffic as there were instances when relatives of prisoners threw banned substances into the jail. Traffic has been diverted from behind the women’s jail as a new road was laid for the very purpose of restricting traffic on the Chanchalguda jail road.
