Hyderabad, February 22: Police gave the students’ joint action committee’s chalo assembly protest a violent turn by lobbing tear gas, caning and firing rubber bullets on protesting students. Large number of cops stopped the students who were peacefully heading towards assembly for two hours.
The police lobbed around 13 shells of teargas at the Nizam College Hostel. One student was injured due to the incident. The students then resorted to pelt stones at the police.
Girl students from various universities tried to barge inside the Assembly premises to press the government to accept their demand however their attempt was thwarted by the police.
The students were demanding a resolution in the Assembly on the T Bill. The students raised ‘Police Go Back’ and ‘Jai Telangana slogans’.
Barricades were installed to block the Hostel gates with the students trying to force their way out.
One MMTS train was set on fire while another Railway station was ransacked. Police and protestors clashed at many places, especially in the Osmania University Campus, again turning it into a battle ground.
A number of students, including many girls, sustained injuries in the lathi-charge some of the policemen were hurt in the stone-pelting incidents. Some 40 students were also arrested from different places when they tried to break the heavy police cordon in an attempt to proceed towards the Assembly as part of their “Chalo Assembly” programme.
Earlier, the Telangana JAC convenor, Prof. Kodandaram, flagged off the students’ rally from the Osmania University campus following “Chalo Assembly” call given by the OU Students JAC.
The students also warned the government of dire consequences and relentless protests till their demands are met.
