Chaitanya student tortured by Batchmates

Hyderabad, July 03: If the worst case of ragging could be termed as an infliction of pain by senior students upon their juniors, the torture of M Sravan Kumar, a senior Inter student of Sri Chaitanya Junior College, Bachupally, is a clear case of sadism.

Sravan was whipped and his nail pulled out by his batchmates.

The incident puts a question mark over the seriousness of colleges in dealing with ragging, coming as it does, days after Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy told educational institutions and universities to curb the menace.

It’s alleged that Sravan’s batchmates, Naveen Choudhary, Vilas Reddy, Saif and Nazeemuddin, whipped him with a copper wire on his back and threatened to hang him. They also forced him to write a suicide note stating that no one was responsible for his ‘suicide.’ All this happened on Tuesday but Sravan was admitted to the Vijayalakshmi Nursing Home only on Thursday. ‘‘They have been harassing me saying that I should not mingle with juniors,’’ Sravan said.

Sravan completed his first-year Inter (BiPC) at Narayana College and joined Seri Lingampally branch of the Chaitanya college for his second-year but was later moved to its Bachupally branch.

His father M Ravinder, who runs a clinic in Vinayak Nagar, came to know of the incident through the college principal.

Sravan’s brother, M Sai Kumar said he had lodged a complaint with the Malkajgiri police where he was told that it would be forwarded to Dundigal police.

Sources said some of the culprits had been arrested.
