The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre on Tuesday appointed Governors for four (Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka & Goa) States. President Pranab Mukherji approved the names forwarded to him by the Union cabinet.
Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao has been appointed Governor of Maharashtra. He was elected thrice as an MLA and twice as MP on behalf of the BJP in the united Andhra Pradesh.
Born in 1945 in Nagaram village under Konaraopet mandal of Karimnagar district, Vidyasagar Rao is the youngest son of Ch. Srinivas Rao and Chandramma. He completed his schooling in Vemulawada, PUC in Hyderabad, B.Sc in Nanded of Maharashtra and LLB from the OU. He entered legal profession in 1973. He was imprisoned during the Emergency period. Later, he joined Jan Sangh and was elected to AP Assembly from Metpally 1985. He entered Lok Sabha by winning Karimnagar seat in 1998 and in 1999. He was also State BJP president. He was inducted as Union minister of State for Home affairs in AB Vajpayee cabinet in 1999.
It may be mentioned here that his elder brothers — Chennamaneni Rajeshwara Rao is a former Communist leader and another Ch Hanumantha Rao was chancellor of Hyderabad Central University.
On receipt of the news of the appointment of Vidyasagar Rao as Mahastrashtra Governor, the BJP functionaries of Karimnagar district celebrated the occasion. By bursting crackers and distributing sweets at the Telangana Chowk in the town. (NSS)
