Hyderabad: Reacting to the announcement of the Union government that it would provide reservations to Economically Backward Castes (upper caste people) in the country, senior Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao today said it had become very common for any politician to make promises ahead of elections and termed the announcement made by the Centre as nothing but an election gimmick of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Referring to the promise made by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao that he would provide 12% reservations to Muslims, Rao said the Bill passed by the State government was gathering dust a the Centre. He said 10% reservations to the EBCs promised by Modi would also remain a pipedream and said it was meant to attract votes of the upper caste communities in the country. He alslo questioned the Union government as to why it was not able to provide 27% reservations to the OBCs of the State recommended by Mandal Commission 25 years back.
