New Delhi, August 01: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday expressed the hope that the Centre will overcome the crisis created by the resignations of Legislators from Telangana.
Talking to media persons here on the eve of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Dr Manmohan Singh’s expression of confidence came even as Congress In-Charge of Andhra Pradesh Affairs Ghulam Nabi Azad rang up the Congress Telangana Steering Committee members twice, asking them to withdraw their resignations.
When the Legislators refused to do so, Mr Azad insisted that they write to Speaker Meira Kumar and request her to defer a decision on their resignations till after the Monsoon Session concludes.
The Prime Minister’s words and Mr Azad’s efforts come at a time when the main opposition unit to the ruling UPA, the NDA, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, is all set to corner it on the Floor of the Parliament on the separate statehood demand.
Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj has already made her party’s aim, to corner the Congress on the separate Telangana statehood demand, clear. Ms Swaraj is believed to have decided that the BJP will issue a ‘Calling Attention’ notice to the Congress on the separate statehood issue.
The other constituents of the National Democratic Alliance are expected to support this notice, apart from political parties from Andhra Pradesh like the Telugu Desam Party.
