Centre turns down proposal to rename West Bengal; Mamata furious

Kolkata: Central government has once again turned down Mamata government’s proposal to change the name of West Bengal. The foreign ministry rejected the proposal of renaming West Bengal as Bangla saying that it resembles with Bangladesh.

Since Mamata Banerjee became the chief minister in 2011 she has been trying to rename West Bengal. He sent the proposal to centre first in 2011, then in 2016 and then in 2018. The previous UPA government didn’t pay attention to the proposal. Again she sent the proposal to the NDA government in 2016 to rename West Bengal as Bengal in English and Bangla in Bengali and Hindi. But the government rejected the proposal saying that different name in different languages may create confusion. Later the West Bengal government sent the proposal to rename the state as ‘Bengal’ in all the three languages. But BJP and RSS have been opposing the proposal saying the name has a historical background and it symbolizes Bengal division.
