Bangalore, July 18: The Centre would establish four world-class institutions for advanced legal studies and research across the country with an investment of Rs 200 crore, Union Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily said on Saturday.
The Centres for Advanced Legal Studies and Research (CALSAR), to be set up at a cost of Rs 50 crore each, are being set up as per recommendations of National Knowledge Commission and expected to start functioning from next year, he said.
“We have not yet decided on the location of the centres,” Moily told reporters here after attending the award ceremony for Microsoft IPR scholarship programme 2009.
The minister said these centres would carry out research on various aspects of law, bring out world-class journals and train legal faculty, besides facilitating multi-disciplinary approaches to law.
“The ultimate goal is to enable the Indian legal fraternity to excel overseas, similar to what the IT sector has been achieving in developed markets,” he said.
Moily said these centres, to be provided an annual budget of Rs five crore each, would be equipped with world-class infrastructure and facilities.
