Centre to release funds for rural water supply

Hyderabad, October 11: The Centre will release about Rs 350 to 450 crore for providing drinking water to villages in the State, Rural Water Supply Minister Viswarup has said.

Speaking with mediapersons here Saturday, the minister said that the Centre was going to give funds under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme and the state government would give a matching grant. With these funds drinking water supply programmes would be taken up in Adilabad, Kurnool, Karimnagar, Mahaboobnagar, Prakasam and Visakhapatnam districts, he said.

Viswarup stated that with the help of World Bank water supply schemes would be taken up in East and West Godavari, Medak and in some other districts.

He said that in Nalgonda district 532 villages had been covered by rural water supply schemes already and, at a cost of Rs 106 crore, 152 villages would be provided drinking water. With this most of the more fluoride-affected villages would get safe drinking water and his department was asking the Centre to provide Rs 160 crore to take up water supply programmes in the remaining areas of Nalgonda district, Viswarup said.
