Centre rejects Mamata’s plea to change the name of West Bengal

Minister of State, Home Affairs, Mr. Nityanand Roy informed Rajya Sabha in response to a written question asked by Ritabrata Banerjee that the Central Govt. did not accept the proposal of Ms. Mamata Benerjee to change the name of West Bengal State as Bangla.

He further told that amendment in the constitution is needed to change the name of a state.

It may be mentioned that the West Bengal Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution on 26th July last year to change the name of the state from West Bengal to Bangla.

It may be mentioned that the name of Orissa State was changed as Odisha in 2011. In 1995, Bombay was changed as Mumbai and in 1996, Madras was renamed as Chennai.

In the same manner in 2001, Calcutta was changed as Kolkata in 2001. In 2014 the of some of the cities in Karnataka were changed which includes the change of name of Bangalore as Bengaluru.
