Asserting that the Centre is sensitive towards people in Assam, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today promised adequate steps to rehabilitate 10,000 persons staying in relief camps following violence in Goalpara district during recent panchayat elections. The present situation in Goalpara district, where 14 people died in violence and seven others in ethic clashes, is under control, he said in the Rajya Sabha. “We are very sensitive to the Assam people…They are Indians….Please do not make politics out of it,” Shinde said responding to queries on the situation of Goalpara district. On members’ concern over poor amenities at relief camps, the minister said “I assure you, the government of India will take measures to provide adequate food, drinking water and medicine to people staying in relief camps.” People staying in relief camps must go back to their respective homes. “If they need security, we are ready to provide,” he said, adding adequate compensation to those whose houses and other properties were damaged during the voilence will also be provided.
