Centre mulls to provide food security to poor: Vasnik

New Delhi, April 06: Union Government is mulling to provide food security to poor people in the country by implementing a scheme, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Vasnik said Sunday.

Inaugurating a convention of Congress workers from Vadodara, Panchmahals, Dohad, Anand, Nadia districts and other parts of central Gujarat in Vadodara Sunday, Vasnik said, “After the success of providing of guaranteed jobs to 4.5-crore people of 613 districts of India under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), the Union Government is thinking a scheme on ensuring food security to the poor people in the country.”

He, however, did not elaborate further on this scheme.

He criticized BJP for boycotting the Lok Sabha during the presentation of the Union Budget on the issue of hike in price of petroleum products saying the hike in petroleum products and essential commodities during six-year NDA rule at the Centre, was much less than Congress-led UPA rule at the Centre.

Vasnik criticized BJP for opposing 30 per cent allocation of the total budget to be spent on social sector and said Rs 60,000 crore will be spent for the rural development and a sum of Rs 1,17,000-crore to be spent for infrastructure development.
