Hyderabad, December 25: As a political backlash erupted in Andhra Pradesh over the decision to put Telangana on the backburner, the Centre on Thursday was considering setting up a states reorganisation commission (SRC) amid pressure mounted by pro- Telangana leaders.
With the issue turning politically volatile, the Centre may consider a proposal to constitute the second States Reorganisation Commission to go into Telangana and demands for bifurcation of other states in a bid to buy time.
However, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao rejected it saying such a proposal “is not at all acceptable. We feel it is an insult,” he said after the first meeting of the Telangana joint action committee in Hyderabad.
Withdrawing the bandh for Friday in view of Christmas, the committee appealed to the Centre and Congress president to take immediate steps for formation of Telangana.
It appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to honour UPA’s commitment to create Telangana.
It was the turn of the pro-Telangana MPs on Thursday to act hurt and up their ante. As Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s statement on Wednesday kindled the Telangana fire, the Congress leaders from the region rushed to their party bosses demanding another clarification on the fate and future of their region.
They also shot off a strongly-worded letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, asking the party high command not to keep the issue in limbo and to spell out a time-frame for the formation of the Telangana state. They also threatened to resign their Lok Sabha seats, a move which would put the UPA on the brink in the Lower House.
