For the second consecutive day, the CBI director Alok Verma appeared before the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) in connection with the inquiry initiated against him by the Supreme Court. Sources have told India Today TV that Verma was examined by the officials and clarification was also sought on certain aspects in regards to allegations against him.
Alok Verma, who was sent on forced leave by the CVC when his name surfaced in a corruption scandal, presented himself before the Commission on Friday morning and the examination lasted for over one hour.
Verma had earlier denied and responded to all the charges levelled against him by Special Director Rakesh Asthana in his written reply to the Central Vigilance Commission.
Apparently, the Central Vigilance Commission was not satisfied with the written reply by Verma and asked him to appear before them.
The Supreme Court had stepped into the supreme drama that has been playing out within the Central Bureau of Investigation. Saying that the controversy surrounding the CBI cannot be allowed to linger on in the interest of the country, a three-judge bench led by the CJI Ranjan Gogoi asked the probe of corruption allegations made by CBI special director Rakesh Asthana against CBI director Alok Verma to be completed within two weeks.
Both Alok Verma and Asthana — who were involved in a bitter feud — were sent on leave by the government to stem the infighting. Nageshwar Rao, a joint director of CBI was appointed as the interim director of the agency.
