Central varsity teachers protest UGC move on new career scheme

New Delhi, January 15: Teachers of Central universities are livid with the University Grants Commission (UGC) over a proposed regulation on their service conditions.

The regulation on Career Advancement Scheme (CAS), if approved by the Commission, would deflect teachers’ attention from their primary responsibility of teaching, the Federation of Central University Teachers’ Association (FEDCUTA) claimed here on Thursday.

“The UGC Committee has given weightage to activities such as campus development, institutional governance and consultancy projects which are not under control of teachers and which solely depend upon administrators’ discretion,” FEDCUTA president A N Mishra told reporters.

The FEDCUTA had earlier met the UGC officials to air their grievances on the proposed CAS. FEDCUTA protested exclusion of teaching experience in ad-hoc and leave vacancy.

The association held an emergency meeting and decided to launch an agitation on the issue. Its executive members will go on one day strike on Saturday. It will organise a dharna in front of the UGC office on that day.

The teachers in Central universities will hold protest programmes on January 28 and 29, if their grievances are nor redressed.
