Mumbai, June 21: Central government is planning a reduction in the Armed forces special power act.
The Central Government is keen to amend the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, due to increase number of human right violation cases in Jammu&Kashmir and North east. The state government has also increaser pressure on the central government on this matter.
The army has been given this right in some parts of Jammu&Kashmir and North east.
Central is seeking a suggestion on the proposed amendment to the Act from defence ministry. After which the matter will been sent to the Union Cabinet for a decision.
According to the new act, Army personnel who allegedly indulge in fake killings, will be handed over of to the local police for prosecution.
But, the armed forces have put their foot down and rejected any plan to dilute the Act.
Activists and the opposition in Kashmir have been vocal in condemning the allegedly fake encounter on April 30 this year in which three civilians were killed by the Army in the Machil sector in Kashmir, which described them initially as infiltrators.
In any case the amendments will have to go through the Cabinet Committee on Security first before the Union Cabinet takes a call.
