CCTV conked out when baby abducted

Hyderabad, October 28: It seems the police face an uphill task to trace the 11-month-old infant, Ajay who was abducted by a burqa-clad woman from Niloufer Hospital on Tuesday.

None of the 18 brand new closed circuit cameras installed inside the hospital premises were working, which has made police investigations hit a dead end. Therefore their hopes of identifying the abductor from CCTV images has taken a backseat. Incidentally, the CCTVs were inaugurated just a couple of days ago by medical education minister P Sudarshan Reddy.

Irked by negligence of hospital authorities, city police have lodged a complaint with the special chief secretary, Health, Medical and Family Welfare, J Satyanarayana against the former’s callous attitude. “Hospital authorities installed 18 CCTVs inside the hospital premises. However, they were not functional. Initially, we were told images had been recorded but later we found it to be otherwise,” Central Zone deputy commissioner of police Akun Sabharwal told Expresso.

With no one being able to see her face, the idea of preparing her sketch also could not take off. After repeated instances of abduction of infants from Niloufer Hospital, city police issued notices to the hospital management to implement safety measures. However, after the grand unveiling cameras were not made functional.

“Moreover, hospital authorities have installed the CCTVs at wrong places. We suggested them locations where they should be installed but they paid no heed,” Sabharwal said.
