New Delhi, Dec 14: The new grading system for classes IX and X introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be a combination of absolute and relative grading, said Professor H S Srivastava, Dean, NCERT.
While as absolute grading will be determined by the marks obtained by the students, it is the relative grading, also called percentiles, that will determine a child’s place among others.
Speaking at a function organised by publishing house. S Chand. on the launch of an interactive module for schools, Professor Srivastava said the questions asked in the exams should be such that they test the specific ability of a child. “Questions should be framed in such a way that various abilities of a child are put to test.”
He further said the various types of questions asked in exams — long form, short form, very short form and multiple form — should be in the question paper and each should be able to test various abilities. “For example, descriptive questions should test the ability of expression of a child,” said Prof Srivastava.
Srivastava also said the grading system will have no effect on the teaching methods. “Grading is a system of declaring results. While marks are the points, grades are the ranges.”
Vandana Puri, principal of Salwan School was also present at the function.
