CBSE cracks the whip on schools running coaching classes on the sly

New Delhi, August 06: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has warned schools against operating coaching institutes on its premises on the pretext of preparing students for various entrance examinations.

The measure comes after the board noticed the practice becoming rife and schools using various stratagems for coaching classes to pass muster.

Schools have been found conduct coaching classes and, at times, even parallel classes for competitive and entrance examinations.

Some schools were organising such coaching classes in the garb of “integrated school programme” ostensibly to teach both the CBSE syllabus and prepare students for entrance tests.

Such practices were affecting the quality of regular teaching.

The board has now directed that the premises of CBSE schools should not be used for any commercial activity.

Violation of guidelines would attract action against the erring schools, it warned. It has also stipulated a minimum number of periods for various subjects in accordance with the syllabus and course prescribed by the board.

The CBSE has noted that schools are charging fees not commensurate with the facilities provided and directed them to refrain from doing so. The board has also asked schools to give first preference to its own students during admission to Class XI. The CBSE advised school managements to endeavour to provide a conducive environment for students to develop their personality.

“To develop a creative human being in a fearless environment, schools should encourage teachers to adopt alternative strategies to corporal punishment,” the board’s circular states.
