CBI to probe role of locals in helping accused

Hyderabad, June 13: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would investigate the role of locals who provided logistical support to those involved in the Mecca Masjid bomb blasts on May 18, 2007.

The premier-investigation agency, which is probing the Mecca Masjid blasts case, would bring the Ajmer blasts accused, who are also alleged to be behind the Mecca blasts, to the city for investigating the conspiracy angle and also to ascertain the role of others in the case.

“There are some leads about the locals who provided the logistics and we will pursue them. Without local support, it would have been impossible to execute the blasts,’’ sources told Media.

A local court gave Prisoner Transit warrant to the CBI after the investigation agency sought permission to examine two of the Ajmer blasts accused – 36-year-old Devender Gupta of Rajasthan and 30- year-old Lokesh Sharma of Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, in the case related to the unexploded bomb detected and defused in the Mecca Masjid. Both of them are presently lodged in a prison in Ajmer after their arrest by the Rajasthan Ani- Terrorist Squad (ATS).

Meanwhile, the CBI also filed a memo in the court stating that it would like to include the names of four persons in the case related to the unexploded bomb found in the Mecca Masjid premises on May 18, 2007. The persons whom the CBI wanted to include in the case include, Sandeep Dange, Ramachandra Kalsangra (both from Indore in MP), Devender Gupta of Rajasthan and Lokesh Sharma of MP.

CBI officials said they suspect Sandeep and Ramachandra came to the city two months before the blasts in Mecca Masjid. The duo, said to experts in making bombs, have prepared the explosives that were planted in the mosque. The duo, however, are absconding.

CBI, however, want to interrogate Devender and Lokesh to know their local contacts who have supported them in executing the blasts in the Mecca Masjid. The CBI officials met Hyderabad Police Commissioner AK Khan today seeking assistance in the investigation.
