Mumbai, October 28: Top bureaucrats, politicians and defence officials are under the scanner for corruption after the CBI launched an investigation into Mumbai’s controversial Adarsh Housing Society, a project meant for Kargil War heroes.
The CBI investigation into the Adarsh Housing Society will find out how the six-storey building for Kargil war heroes and widows became a 31-storey residential tower for top defence officials and politicians.
The investigation agency has written to the Mumbai collectorate, the Western Naval Command as well as the office bearers of the Adarsh Housing Society office bearers to provide details about the project.
The Western Naval Commander Vice Admiral Sanjeev Bhasin had in a letter dated July 5 accused the Army of trying to appropriate the land. He warned of a conspiracy to take over prime land reserved for war widows and war veterans.
He demanded that the Army inquire into duplicity by serving or retired officers. However, the Army lied to the Ministry of Defence which then misled Parliament.
The 100-metre tall building also violates the coastal height regulation limit of 30 metres and no further construction should be allowed and nobody allowed to occupy their flats.
Defence Minister AK Antony had said that his ministry has been investigating the matter.
Maharashtra Revenue authorities had admitted to CNN-IBN earlier that the land on which the Adarsh building stands was not defence land but no objections were raised when the land was handed over for building flats.
