CBI to probe Goa drug-nexus cases: Kamat

Panaji, February 16:Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat today said his government has urged the Union Home Ministry to ask the CBI to investigate the policemen-drug peddler nexus cases in the tourist state.

“State Home Minister Ravi Naik has already tabled in the Legislative Assembly, the letters written by Chief Secretary urging Union Home Ministry to hand over drug nexus cases to CBI,” Kamat said.

The state government’s announcement to hand over the case to CBI was faulted on Monday when CBI counsel told the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court here that they have not received any such request.

The central agency had stated that such cases should be investigated by Goa police or Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

Kamat said that the CBI’s reply to the court did not fault the state government.

“CBI is governed by Union Home Ministry. They will investigate the case after they receive communication from the Ministry,” the CM said.

Last year, Goa police were dumb struck after Israeli drug lord Yaniv Benaim alias Atala confessed about his links with the cops. Following this, Seven police officers were arrested by Crime Branch, which probed the case.

In yet another revelation, Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Sunil Guddler was caught on camera trying to push drugs to two foreign women in January, this year.

The Goa government has claimed that they have referred both the cases to CBI for thorough investigations.
