CBI needs to be protected from external forces: Manmohan Singh

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Central Vigilance Commission on Tuesday said that investigating agencies enjoy complete autonomy, and that the government is willing to do more to insulate the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from external influence.

“Investigating agencies enjoy complete autonomy over matters of investigation and the government is willing to do more to insulate CBI from external influences. But these agencies also need to maintain a balance between the need to be careful and the need for speed. Excessive delays make such exercises meaningless,” said Dr.Singh.

“It is necessary to maintain a balance in matters that involve a high level of expertise in analyzing and scrutinizing complex decisions. It points towards the need of a greater professional expertise on diverse fields in agencies like the CBI,” he said.

He also said that there have recently been a lot of public debates on matters of corruption.

“In the past few years we have been witnessing a very vigorous public debates on matters related to corruption with accusations flying thick and fast. While informed discussion on such matters is always desirable much too often we see trivialization of complex public policies which should not happen,” said Dr.Singh.

“It is also necessary to ensure that the political executive exercises the oversight that it is expected to in a democratic polity over any investigating agencies,” he added. (ANI)
