New Delhi, September 10: After refusing to be quizzed by CBI in connection with the bribery case involving his son, Buta Singh, chairman for the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), would be available to the investigating agency today at 11 am at his office and the probe agency officials can question him.
On Monday he told the Delhi High Court that he was ready to appear before the investigating agency.
Singh, who had struck a defiant note saying CBI has no authority to question a constitutional functionary, having powers of a civil court, without Centre’s sanction, agreed to do so after the agency clarified that he is required as a witness and not as an accused in the bribery case.
Justice Geeta Mittal, after recording the statement given by Singh’s counsel, disposed the matter and asked the agency to question him on the date given by him.
Buta Singh’s son was arrested on July 31 by CBI for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs one crore from a Nashik- based contractor to close an atrocity case against him pending before the Commission headed by his father.
The High Court had on August 26 sought response from the CBI on a petition filed by Singh, who had accused the probe agency of “illegally” summoning him.
Singh, who had approached the High Court on August 25, had also contended that he holds a post of Cabinet rank and the CBI cannot question or interrogate him without taking sanction from the Centre.
