Cuba, May 06: The former Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, has strongly condemned the United States for killing al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden before the eyes of his family, saying it was an “abhorrent act.”
“Whatever actions may have been attributed to bin Laden, the assassination of an unarmed human being surrounded by his family constitutes an abhorrent act,” he said, writing in the Cuban press.
He warned that after an initial period of euphoria, Americans would wind up condemning the use of methods that “far from protecting citizens, ends up multiplying the feelings of hatred and vengeance against them.”
“Assassinating him and sending him to the depths of the sea shows fear and insecurity, (and) turns him into a much more dangerous figure,” he said of Bin Laden.
He has also expressed that the raid inside Pakistan by a team of US Navy Seals actually means the violation of the Asian country’s laws, and is an offence to its dignity, AP reports.
Castro, now 84, said he abhor all forms of terrorism, noting that he expressed solidarity with the United States despite decades of political differences following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
United States President Barack Obama, on Sunday, announced that al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed by US forces after he was found hiding in a compound in Pakistan.
During the Sunday US operation, three other men — including a son of the al-Qaeda leader — and a woman were also killed.
