Chennai, March 12: Flying squads of Tamil Nadu police and the income tax (IT) department have seized around Rs.150 million from various places across the state while the cash was being transported, a top official said here Saturday.
Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar told reporters that around Rs.150 million hard cash has been seized during the last four days by the flying squads. In Madurai alone around Rs.35 million has been seized.
With the model code of conduct for the polls in place, those who carry more than Rs.200,000 in cash must produce documentary proof failing which the cash will be seized and deposited with the IT department.
Kumar said a sum of Rs.5 million was seized from a real estate businessman in Tiruppur.
The IT department has formed around 70 teams to monitor the movement of hard cash in the state.
The raids come in the wake of allegations that cash was being paid for votes in the coming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
